About our DNA tests
Why is DNA testing useful?
DNA testing provides valuable insights into your personal health by identifying genetic predispositions to certain diseases. This allows you to take proactive steps towards managing your health, tailored specifically to your genetic makeup. With this information, you can optimize your diet, exercise, and overall wellness plans to better suit your body's needs.
Who is our DNA test partners?
Beyond Geno collaborates with the most reputable DNA companies in Asia, many of which operate laboratories accredited by local health authorities and certified by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). These companies frequently utilize advanced technology, such as Illumina's microarray chips, to analyze DNA samples.
These chips are equipped with comprehensive, genome-wide markers that are representative of a wide range of populations. This technology enables the labs to efficiently assess DNA for specific genetic traits associated with different wellness characteristics.
Who is Genoplan?
Genoplan, established in 2014, is Korea's pioneering direct-to-consumer DNA testing company. It made a significant entrance into the Asian market, where there was a notable gap in genetic data and services tailored for Asian populations. The company focuses on providing detailed health insights through genetic analysis, allowing individuals to understand their susceptibility to various diseases, traits, and medication responses based on their DNA.
What sets Genoplan apart is its comprehensive approach to genetic testing, providing over 500 reports on various health aspects including cancer risks, common diseases, and personal traits. This extensive coverage gives users a broad understanding of their genetic health landscape, enabling proactive health management. Genoplan's tests are designed for easy at-home use with simple saliva samples, and the results are accessible through a user-friendly platform, making the process convenient and straightforward.
How accurate is Genoplan report?
Modern genetics rely on extensive data and the science of probability, and most DNA tests achieve high accuracy. Advances in DNA sequencing technology have led to significant improvements in precision, and the identification of genetic markers tends to be very reliable when carried out in reputable labs by skilled professionals. Nonetheless, if there are doubts about the accuracy of a DNA report, several factors might be responsible.
Is DNA testing considered as a medical diagnostic test?
There is a wide variety of DNA testing options, including both medical and non-medical tests. Medical DNA tests require a prescription from healthcare providers such as doctors and are subject to strict regulations. On the other hand, many DNA tests sold online are non-medical and fall into the category of 'Direct-To-Consumer' products. These non-medical tests provide therapeutic advice to consumers. In the Beyond Geno marketplace, all DNA tests available from our vendors are consumer genetic products. Beyond Geno does not provide any medical-grade DNA testing.
Is a DNA test different from a health screening test?
Yes. A DNA test assesses your inherent genetic traits, whereas a health screening evaluates your current health status. For instance, even if your DNA results indicate a genetic resistance to high cholesterol, you could still develop high cholesterol due to poor lifestyle choices. Therefore, it's advisable to use a DNA test from Beyond Geno as a guide to enhance your lifestyle choices or to foresee potential health issues.
Who can perform the DNA test?
Our genetic makeup remains consistent from birth through adulthood, allowing DNA testing to be conducted at any stage of life, including infancy. Provided that a DNA sample can be collected from the child, such as drool or saliva, and proper procedures for DNA collection are followed, there are no limitations based on age.
Can I do a DNA test if I am sick?
Your illnesses will not affect your DNA makeup and therefore will not affect your ability to do a DNA test. However, if you recently had an illness that required antibiotics, you should wait until you have fully recovered before doing a DNA test. This is so that your sample will only contain your DNA and not that of the bacteria that caused the illness.
Can I get DNA testing when pregnant?
DNA testing does not involve any processes that could harm pregnant women. Furthermore, a mother's genetic information stays constant, regardless of her pregnancy status. Additionally, the company Beyond Geno ensures the safety and integrity of genetic testing.
Do the results of my DNA report change with time?
Genes do not change, but research on the specific expression of individual genes are still evolving. Results of your DNA analysis may change in the future because of newly added discoveries pertaining to each genetic expression or changed effects of previously selected genes. As most reputable DNA companies offer dynamic updates to their online DNA reports, you can simply check your DNA report regularly for updates on new traits or improved accuracy.
Why is my DNA test report inaccurate or wrong?
If your DNA test results indicate a characteristic that doesn't seem to match your experience, there's no need to worry. It's common for there to be discrepancies between the traits your genes predict and those you exhibit, due to the impact of your lifestyle and environment. For instance, even if your DNA suggests you should have a lot of hair, you might still experience hair loss in a harmful environment.
Will my personal information be shared to third parties?
No. We do not sell, lease or rent any of your data with any third party. Only you can decide how your results are used and shared with others.
Can I have my DNA sequenced anonymously?
Genoplan have designed their service to give customers control over how much information they share. That includes giving our customers the prerogative to use a pseudonym.
What this means is when you register your kit, you can use an alias name.
Once your sample reaches the laboratory, it is identified by the unique anonymous code printed directly on the sample tube.
Do I have to disclose my genetic results to my insurance company?
For individuals based in Singapore, you are not obligated to provide your DNA results to your insurance provider and insurance providers do not ask for your DNA results. Many other countries follow The Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA), a U.S. federal law that protects individuals genetic discrimination in health insurance and employment, protects your genetic information from use by health insurance providers.
GINA makes it against the law for your health insurer to:
- Collect and look at your genetic information (including family medical history) before you enroll or in connection with your enrollment in a health insurance plan, or restrict your enrollment based on your genetic information
- Ask or require that you or your family members take a genetic test
- Adjust your health insurance premiums, contribution amounts or coverage terms based on your genetic information
